The Honda ZR-V e:HEV is imported from Japan while the Amaze, City and Elevate are made in India. Here is what Honda has confirmed, what the import decision suggests, and what buyers should ask.
Here is an interesting reversal: Honda builds the Elevate in India and exports an India-made version to Japan as the WR-V. Yet the Honda ZR-V e:HEV sold in India travels in the opposite direction. Honda imports it from Japan as a completely built unit, or CBU.
Why bring an SUV across borders when Honda already makes cars in India? The clearest answer begins with Honda’s product positioning. The ZR-V is its flagship SUV for the Indian market, introduced with a 2.0-litre strong-hybrid powertrain and a premium price. Honda has confirmed the import method, but it has not published a detailed commercial reason for importing this model instead of manufacturing it locally.
What does “imported as a CBU” mean?
A completely built unit is a finished vehicle made abroad and brought into India for sale. The ZR-V is manufactured in Japan and sold here through Honda’s Indian dealership network. It is not an SUV assembled at Honda Cars India’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan.
That contrasts with the company’s familiar Indian lineup. Honda identifies the Amaze, City and Elevate as models manufactured in India. The imported ZR-V expands the range above them with a different powertrain, equipment package and market position.
“Imported” describes where the vehicle comes from. It does not, by itself, tell you how long a service appointment or a parts order will take. Those are practical questions to ask the dealer about the specific vehicle and your location.
The surprising Elevate connection
The Elevate gives this story an unusual twist. Honda has publicly celebrated the export of the India-made Elevate to Japan, where it is sold as the WR-V. India is therefore also a production and export base in Honda’s wider car business.
The ZR-V serves a different role. It is a global Honda SUV offered to Indian buyers as a Japan-built hybrid. That does not make it an imported Elevate or a facelift of the Elevate. They are separate models with different market positions.
If you are choosing between them, begin with your needs rather than their country of manufacture. The Elevate is a locally manufactured petrol SUV in a different price bracket. The ZR-V is a higher-priced strong hybrid with a broader premium equipment list. A test drive and a written quotation will make the difference more useful than a “made here versus imported” label.
Why this model, and why now?
Honda’s July 2026 announcement calls the ZR-V its flagship SUV in India. It confirmed an introductory price of ₹47,99,000, ex-showroom Delhi, and the start of customer deliveries. Honda said the first two batches for India had already been booked at the time of that announcement.
These facts show how Honda introduced the vehicle: as a premium addition with limited early allocations. It is an inference that importing an existing Japan-built model allows Honda to offer this particular global hybrid in India without first establishing local production for it. Honda has not stated that as its official reason or announced a future local-assembly plan.
Price alone cannot reveal the full calculation. Specifications, import-related costs, logistics, currency movements and pricing decisions can all matter. Do not treat an online estimate of “what the ZR-V would cost if made in India” as an announced Honda price.
Where does the ZR-V sit in Honda’s India range?
Honda’s cars answer different needs. The Amaze is a compact sedan. The City covers the larger sedan space, including an e:HEV hybrid option. The Elevate is Honda’s locally built SUV. The ZR-V adds a premium SUV with a 2.0-litre e:HEV strong-hybrid system.
Honda lists combined maximum output of 184 PS and maximum torque of 315 Nm for the ZR-V, along with a certified fuel-efficiency figure of 22.8 km/l. Those figures establish its technical position, but certified economy is not a promise of the same result on every Pune commute.
The equipment supports its flagship role too. Honda lists features such as a 12-speaker Bose audio system, 360-degree camera, powered front seats, Honda SENSING driver assistance and eight airbags for the India-spec ZR-V. These details help explain why Honda presents it as a different proposition from the Elevate; you can decide which features matter to you.
Does a Japan import change ownership?
An import decision matters most when you move from launch headlines to an actual purchase. Ask about the on-road price in your city, not only the Delhi ex-showroom announcement. Request a written breakdown and confirm the current quotation, delivery allocation and colour availability.
Next, discuss service. Which authorised facility will handle your ZR-V? What is the recommended maintenance schedule? How are routine parts stocked, and what is the process if a model-specific part is needed? Answers may vary by part and location, so ask for specifics.
Honda has announced a three-year unlimited-kilometre standard warranty for the ZR-V, an eight-year/160,000 km warranty for its lithium-ion battery and a five-year/100,000 km warranty for hybrid-system components, subject to the stated terms and limits. Read the warranty documents for the coverage details and clarify any optional plans you are considering.
Finally, drive the car in conditions you know. Include slow traffic, a clear stretch and, if possible, a parking manoeuvre. The ZR-V’s automatic switches between electric, hybrid and engine drive are easier to understand from behind the wheel than from a specification table.
Three myths worth leaving at the showroom door
“Imported means there is no Honda support in India.” Honda launched the ZR-V through its Indian sales network with an announced warranty. Confirm service arrangements and parts processes with an authorised dealer rather than making assumptions either way.
“It is just a more expensive Elevate.” Honda positions the ZR-V as a separate global, strong-hybrid flagship SUV. Compare its powertrain, equipment, space and total price on their own merits.
“₹47,99,000 is what I will pay in Pune.” Honda stated that figure as an introductory ex-showroom Delhi price at launch. Your local on-road quotation is the number to use for a buying decision.
The place it fills
The Japan-built ZR-V shows Honda adding a premium hybrid SUV above its locally manufactured core range. That is the confirmed picture. Honda has not disclosed a full business case for importing it, and there is no need to invent one to understand the choice a buyer faces.
If the ZR-V e:HEV interests you, compare it with the Elevate and City e:HEV based on your driving, space and budget needs. Deccan Honda can help you request a test drive and discuss current quotation and delivery availability in Pune or Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
