Digital Registration Certificates Now Primary Vehicle Record Under New RTO Framework

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially implemented a new vehicle registration system under which digital Registration Certificates (RCs) will become the primary record for all vehicles registered in India.

Under the new framework, physical RC cards will continue to be issued, but digital records stored on the government’s Parivahan portal will be treated as the official and legally valid source of vehicle ownership, insurance status, and compliance data.

MoRTH stated that the change is aimed at reducing fraud, eliminating duplicate registrations, and improving verification during traffic enforcement and vehicle transfers. Law enforcement agencies and toll systems will now rely primarily on digital records for real-time vehicle validation.

Vehicle owners have been advised to ensure that their mobile numbers, Aadhaar details, and address information are correctly linked to their vehicle records in the Parivahan system. Incorrect or outdated information may result in issues during resale, insurance claims, or roadside inspections.

The new system applies to all private and commercial vehicles and is effective nationwide.
